Statement on Changes to the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA)
We have been pushing hard for these long overdue changes to the CEBA because some of the smallest and hardest hit businesses were left out. It’s very encouraging that more of these business owners and sole proprietors will be getting the support they really need.
Today's announcement is a relief for businesses owners but I’m worried that this good news came too late for many small businesses who have closed their doors permanently while they waited for the government to step in and help them. Now that more business owners can access CEBA, the government needs to roll out the details of the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance Program (CECRA) quickly.
We need to make sure our local communities don’t lose any more small businesses by finally getting them the rent help the government promised.
New Democrats are have always been focused on getting more help to businesses that need it quickly. Instead of designing programs to make sure that no one is left behind, the government is continually desigining programs that cut people and businesses out. These changes to CEBA, combined with serious amendments to the CECRA, will give small businesses a fighting chance to survive the spread of COVID-19.
