Letter of Support for Health and Wellness Practitioners

Dear Minister,

I’m writing to you in my capacity as NDP Critic for Small Business and Tourism to urge you to provide expanded supports for Health and Wellness practitioners in Canada.

All over the country, personal trainers, fitness, yoga and pilates instructors, chiropractors, physiotherapists, massage therapists, acupuncturists, and staff at sport and recreation centers have been struggling to make it through the COVID-19 pandemic. Canadians rely on people in this sector to help them stay physically and mentally healthy and now immediate supports are needed to ensure the industry does not collapse.

Many of the practitioners’ clinics have been closed or are operating at significantly reduced capacity but have not been eligible for existing emergency relief programs. While many have made innovative adjustments to their businesses, like teaching or doing online consultations, revenues are still down significantly, and these small businesses remain accountable for 100% or their operational costs. Existing programs must be expanded to save the small businesses in the health and wellness industry.

Your government can support this sector by:

  • Expanding the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistant (CECRA) program to support businesses facing a loss of 30% or more of their pre-COVID revenue.
  • Immediately put a moratorium on all evictions.
  • Provide ongoing operational cost relief as businesses re-open and begin to build their capital and client base.
  • Expand supports to businesses that rely on contract workers, including alternatives to the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) so that business owners can rehire and support the people who make their businesses unique.

Thank you for your attention to these matters affecting the health and wellness industry, I look forward to your response.
