The deadline for the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program application period has been extended, and Courtenay-Alberni MP Gord Johns is encouraging community organizations to apply for funding through the program.

"This program offers an opportunity to help youth gain valuable work experience," said Johns. "It also provides an important investment for the local economy, and helps tackle youth unemployment which is extremely high in Canada."

The deadline for the CSJ employer application period has been extended to Feb. 3, 2017.

CSJ has created almost 400,000 student jobs since its inception.

Just last year in the Courtenay-Alberni riding alone, the program helped secure funding for 173 student positions.

In Courtenay-Alberni, the priorities this year include:

•Indigenous organizations and programs

•Historical associations and societies

•Not-for-profit harbour and airport authorities

•Community based not-for-profit organizations

•Skilled trades

•Tourism, tourism visitor centers, interpretative programs

•Summer camps

•Habitat enhancement

•Environment and green initiatives.
