Over 50 people from the Alberni Valley packed Hansen Hall at the beginning of September to hear what Courtenay-Alberni MP Gord Johns had to say about electoral reform—and to offer up their own opinions.
Local resident Gary Swann said he'd like to see proportional representation.
"I would like to see a system where if you get a certain percentage of the vote you get that percentage of people sitting in parliament," Swann said.
The town hall meeting was one of three that Johns held this month—the other two were in Parksville and Courtenay. "This was the number one issue throughout the election," said Johns in a later interview, noting that this was the case for supporters of both the NDP and the Liberals.
"People were talking about it throughout this whole riding."
Johns said that he didn't have a particular electoral system format in mind but that he was interested in hearing from his consitituents as to how they wanted to be represented in Ottawa.
